My guide to Danish art and design museums

This is my guide to some of my favourite Danish art and design museums. They all have something special to offer and you can expect some very interesting upcoming exhibitions. When visiting a museum I appreciate the total experience, so for me the architecture and the cake they serve in the cafe is just as important when evaluating the museum.

Louisiana
Louisiana is a museum of modern art. The museum is large and you can easily spend a whole day there enjoying the 3-4 different exhibitions. The magical thing about Louisiana is the location. The museum is located in a large beautiful garden with a panoramic view of Sweden, you can even enjoy the beautiful view while sipping your coffee in the well placed cafe. The architecture at Louisiana is really something. You will experience architecture built from mid 50's characterized by large windows, wooden materials, interaction with the outside nature and simplicity. Do not forget to have a look in the Louisiana shop with the very well selected range of design products. If you are in Copenhagen do yourself the favor and hop on a 30 min. train trip to visit the Louisiana Museum north from Copenhagen.

Ordrupgaard
Ordrupgaard Museum houses French Impressionist art and Danish art from the Golden Age with a collection of paintings by artists such as Monet, Gauguin and Hammershøi. Here you will experience beautiful modern architecture made as an extension to the older building in 2005. Ordrupgaard also has a beautiful art park with several contemporary art installations. A beautiful cafe is located in the modern building with a great view of the garden. A few meters from Ordrupgaard museum you will find the former home of Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl which is really worth a visit. The house is open in the weekends and you will buy the ticket at Ordrupgaard. Ordrupgaard museum is located 15 min. from Copenhagen center.
Please notice that Ordrupgaard will be temporary closed during 2018 and will open again in 2019.

Design Museum Denmark
Design museum Denmark is located in the heart of Copenhagen in the former Royal Frederik's hospital from 1752. Just experiencing the architecture here is worth a visit. At Design museum Denmark you will experience different exhibitions showcasing design in any aspect through the years. Remember to take a brake in the beautiful cafe full of Kaare Klint lamps hanging from the ceiling and enjoy one of their lovely cakes.

Gl. Strand
Gl. Strand is an art museum located in the center of Copenhagen. They say about their exhibitions: The exhibitions are addressed to a wide public and always reflect our own time, either by focusing on art-historical themes in a present-day perspective or by presenting the very latest tendencies on the Danish and international art scene. Gl. Strand is a small charming art museum located right next to the canal and is surrounded by the charming old town houses in all colors. You will find some well selected exhibitions here and experience the beautiful architecture of the old town house.

Øregaard Museum
Øregaard museum is a small art museum located in my old hood; Hellerup a little north from Copenhagen center. It's not that well known as museums like Louisiana but I want to recommend it anyway. Øregaard museum is located in a very charming house build in the beginning of 1800 by the French architect Joseph-Jacques Rameé. At Øregaard you will experience art collections by famous Danish artists from 1750-1950. Øregaard museum is surrounded by a beautiful public park which you can enjoy from the little cafe in the museum. When being in the area you should go a few hundred meters down the road to see the sea. If you are in Copenhagen center I will recommend to rent a bike and ride through Østerbro via Strandvejen to Øregaard museum, it will take about 20-30 min.

Trapholt
Trapholt is a large museum of modern art and design located in the southern part of Denmark on the mainland of Jutland. It takes around 2,5 hours from Copenhagen by car. The museum is located on a hill top and from the cafe you will see a stunning view of Kolding fjord. Trapholt showcases a beautiful mix of modern art and design during the year. A bonus about this place is that the Danish designer and architect Arne Jacobsen's summerhouse is located right next to Trapholt. Here there will be guided tours three times a day which is really worth a visit.
